This MSc project aims to design a Parkinson's Disease (PD) symptoms assessment tool using a smartphone application that allows PD patients to assess their symptoms using both quantitative and qualitative tests. The mobile phone has different sensors, like the touch screen and motion trackers, for objectively measuring PD symptoms, whereas questionnaires and cognitive tests target the subjective and cognitive domains. All of this data can be collected and used for consistent scoring over time.

The goal of this project is to implement a mobile PD assessment app and implement an automatic scoring system for it. More specifically, the project should:

  • review existing work on the design of mobile health for PD
  • work with PD specialists and clinicians to design an optional interactive design
  • implement the PD assessment tool
  • employ user-centered design methods for the design and usability evaluation of the tool
  • design and implement an automatic scoring of the test on the smartphone
  • run a small (N=21) validation study of the smartphone-based PD tool

This project builds upon and uses the CARP Research Platform and its different components and packages, including tools for surveys, cognitive assessment, and collection of all sorts of mobile sensing data. Depending on your software engineering skills, you may choose to use the default CARP Study App, or you may want to design and implement your own Flutter app using the available CARP packages.
